Chapter Seven

They stop in front of the long counter where they are greeted by a gray haired woman of indeterminate age wearing a plain buckskin dress with calf length moccasins.

"Chan tay washday nay pay chee you za poe. I am Leah Morning Dove. You must be John Walking Horse. Tanyan yahi. I am pleased to see you, my brother. I have heard many good stories of your flute playing."

"Uhn-chee. Wah-shday-ahn-pay-du. This is my longtime friend Sean Hagarty. The lady is… Don't believe I caught your first name."

"Jackie Kwon. I brought them here from Van Buren Villa. I drive for Flash."

"You have a good heart Jackie Kwon. This I can see." The gray haired woman grasps Kwon's outstretched hand.

"Thank you."

Morning Dove looks at the other man. "And you are?"

"I'm Skinner from VBV. I'm accompanying the Indian on his first outing to town."

"Is that necessary?" asks Morning Dove. "I don't get the feeling he's dangerous."

"He's not. If it were up to me, I wouldn't be here. But," Skinner shrugs his shoulders, "Like them I have to follow the rules. And I get to see something more interesting than VBV once in a while."

"I see. Welcome, all of you." Morning Dove turns back to Walking Horse "If I get your flute for you, will you play us a song?"

Walking Horse nods his head. "I will do this."

"Good." I've been hoping to hear you play in person, rather than only from your CD's."

Morning Dove steps back to her office, returning with a beautiful carved flute of red cedar. Near the mouth piece the wind instrument is adorned with an intricate white buffalo carving. Rawhide strips are threaded through four holes in the base. An eagle feather hangs from one of the strips.

Walking Horse closely examines the flute, before gently stroking the carved mouthpiece. "I'll play part of a song from John Two Hawks CD the Wind of My Soul. It's called I Travel." He nods his head in the direction of Kwon. "For the lady."

The room falls silent, except for the haunting melody being coaxed from the flute.

Clasping her hands in front of her, Kwon bows to Walking Horse. "That was wonderful. You need a ride anytime, give me a call. I'll do it for a song." She hands him her business card. "Here's my cell number."

"When I need a ride again I will call you." Walking Horse beams at Kwon, before winking at her. "You ready to go Irish?"

"Anytime you are."

Morning Dove moves back behind the counter. "Come again."

"Pilamaya Uhn-chee

"You are welcome John Walking Horse. "Toksha ake wacinyuanktin ktelo."
